F1 Betting Markets & Bet Types Explained
There are many different F1 betting sites that offer a range of different bet types for Formula 1. Here, we’ll tell you all about the main F1 betting markets that are generally available at most betting sites, as well as some of the more unusual (and perhaps more exciting!) Formula 1 betting markets that you may come across.
Race Winner
This is probably the most popular of all the bet types when it comes to Formula 1 betting. It pretty much does what it says on the tin; you’re betting on which driver will cross the finish line first and win the race. You can choose from any driver in the field for those individual races, and if your driver wins, your bet wins. This is usually a good way for beginners to F1 betting sites to start as a first bet, as there will be only a handful of likely race winners on race day, so you’ll be in with a good chance of coming out on top.
Podium Finish
In this type of wager, you’re choosing a driver to finish on the podium. In other words, you’re betting on a particular F1 driver to cross the finish line in first, second or third place in that GP race. As long as your driver finishes in any one of those positions, your bet will win. This is another nice easy choice for a first bet.
Top 6 Finish
Very similar to a podium finish bet, but in this instance you’re selecting an F1 driver to finish anywhere in the top six. This may well provide you with a good opportunity to back an underdog that you fancy to do well in an individual race.
Fastest Lap
In fastest lap betting, you’re betting on one driver to complete the fastest lap of the race. Bear in mind that this is not always the fastest driver. The fastest lap is often set by the driver who has a large lead over the closest pursuer and who can make a ‘free’ pit-stop to set a lap on fresh tyres.
World Drivers’ Championship Betting
In this type of bet, you’re backing one particular driver to win the whole Championship at the end of the Formula 1 season. These are season long bets, so you might want to place yours before the season starts. Alternatively, you can bet mid-season, once you’ve seen which drivers are doing particularly well. This can be an exciting bet for many bettors to take as it will keep your interest all season long and every race counts; you could be on the edge of your seat come season’s end, especially if there’s a tight winning margin, as there was between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in 2021.
World Constructor’s Championship Betting
When you wager on the World Constructors’ Championship, rather than backing a particular driver, you’re backing a racing team to gain the most points throughout the Formula One season. In the Constructors Championship, different cars earn points for the same team throughout the season; you’re betting on which team will accrue the most points in the end.
Head-to-Head
This type of bet is handy if you’re looking for a bit of variation on the standard Formula One racing markets. In a head-to-head bet, the punter picks a driver from a group of between two and six that will finish highest in the race. There are usually a lot of different groups to choose from at the best F1 betting sites, so you should find a bet that suits you.
Will a Safety Car Feature?
This bet type is a bit of fun really, as the answer is a simple yes or no; you’re betting on whether the safety car will feature somewhere in the race. Obviously, a safety car is more likely to be needed in a race with sharp bends and tight corners, than one with few corners and great weather conditions. Therefore, you can generally use your common sense to predict this type of bet, but you’re unlikely to find fantastic odds here as a consequence.
Next Pit Stop
If you’re a fan of pit stops and live betting, then this just might be one of your favourite bet types. Some F1 betting sites offer in-play betting markets on the next driver to make a pit stop.
Formula 1 Live Betting & Streaming
There are a number of opportunities with some of the larger online bookmakers and Formula 1 betting sites for in-play betting on Formula. However, live streaming is generally not available with Formula 1 due to the strict and lucrative contracts that F1 has with broadcasting companies. However, you can find in-play markets for F1, which appear on the F1 betting sites at the time of the individual races. It’s worth paying close attention to the television coverage while utilising these selected sportsbook markets for your bet.
We’ve done our research and our top three picks with the best opportunities for live betting on F1 are BetVictor, Coral and Bet365.
F1 Betting Tips & Strategies
Whether you’re a seasoned fan of the very popular sport that is Formula 1, or one of the many new customers joining an online bookmaker for the first time (or both!), we’ve got some top betting tips and betting strategies to help you win money while having fun taking a punt on Formula One.
Know The Drivers
It goes without saying really that knowing the drivers and their performances inside out and back to front can help you to place bets that are sensible. It’s useful to know how a driver has performed in the previous World Championship as well as previous races in the current season, so you can get an idea of their current form. You may also know that certain drivers are particularly good on certain race tracks. For example, Lewis Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix more times than any other driver in the history of Formula One, so he’s a pretty strong bet at Silverstone, United Kingdom.
Take Notice of Grid Positions
Any Formula One fan will know how important grid position (especially “pole position”, which means being in first place), is when it comes to predicting the finishing order. However, what’s absolutely the most important is knowing how important the grid positions are for that particular race. For example, pole position on some narrow city circuits, such as Monaco, brought wins up to 80% of the time, while on other circuits poles brought wins less than 50% of the time.
Consider Starting Positions for Fastest Lap
If you’re placing a fastest lap bet, it might not be the driver in pole position who performs the fastest lap, contrary to what you might expect. The race leader is actually more likely to maintain a steady pace in order to keep his lead, while a driver further back in the field will be flooring the accelerator to make up time, which may lead to a bet being successful.
Check the Weather Forecast
It’s important to always consider the weather conditions when placing bets on Formula One. Rain in particular can cause some epic upsets in F1 racing, as often the fastest cars can struggle to reach their top speeds when in wet conditions. It’s also worth checking back on which drivers fared well in wet weather conditions earlier in the season, as this might help you to see who is most skilled in those track conditions.
At the other end of the spectrum, very hot weather can have a huge impact too. Track temperature can quickly affect tire performance, so be sure to keep a close eye on the weather forecast and the temperature of the track if you’re utilising a live betting feature or considering cashing out early.
Take Advantage of Bonuses and Promotions
Many betting sites offer an initial bonus for new customers. These usually come in the form of Free bets paid once you’ve made a qualifying bet. After qualifying bet settlement, bookmakers will credit a Free bet into your online betting site account. Bettors can then make a sports wager while betting on Formula 1 using these Free bets, with nothing to lose. There may be a minimum odds requirement or other wagering conditions to meet, so be sure to read the terms and conditions for each Formula 1 betting site carefully.
Always Look For The Highest Odds
This might sound obvious but if you’re looking for fantastic odds on your chosen wager, it really does pay to shop around for the best F1 betting sites odds. Many online sportsbooks offer enhanced odds such as Odds Boosts for qualifying bets, which can result in bettors snapping up competitive odds compared to other online bookmakers. Combine this with a great Welcome bonus amount for new customers, and you really are maximising the bang for your buck when it comes to F1 betting.
Most Popular F1 Races
If you’re interested in placing a bet on F1, then it’s important to know a little bit about the competitions that form the championship. There are many different races that combine to form the Formula One championship, with the exact number held in a season varying over the years. Originally in 1950 at the inception of the Formula 1 Championship, there were only seven F1 races. Since then, the number has grown to a whopping 22 events in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, with more countries being added to the race roster in order to broaden the reach of Formula One even further. We’ll discuss some of the main ones here. So, without further ado, here are some of the big races, otherwise known as Grand Prix.
British Grand Prix
The British GP is the oldest Grand Prix in the history of Formula 1, as it was round one of the very first world championship season in 1950, while the first ever GP at Silverstone, United Kingdom, was held in 1926, predating F1. Held annually since the start of Formula One, the British Grand Prix takes place at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, England. Lewis Hamilton currently holds the record for the most wins at Silverstone, with a current tally of a whopping eight wins.
Italian Grand Prix
The Italian Grand Prix is one of only two GPs that have taken part in every single Formula One World Championship since its inception in 1950 (the other, of course, being the British GP). Held at the Monza Circuit in Italy, the very first race there was in 1921. The record for the most wins in the Italian GP is jointly held by two drivers: Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, each with five wins apiece.
French Grand Prix
The French GP holds the title of the world’s oldest Grand Prix, with the first being held there in 1906. Perhaps surprisingly for an event with such a long history, the location of the French race has changed between sixteen different race circuits throughout France over the years, with the most recent location being the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, France. Michael Schumacher holds the record for the most wins with a total of eight wins under his belt.
Monaco Grand Prix
The Monaco Grand Prix is held annually on the Circuit de Monaco, on the streets of Monaco itself, usually on the last weekend of May. The Monaco circuit is considered one of the most demanding tracks of Formula One, as it is a very narrow course with many elevation changes and tight corners, not to mention the tunnel. The safety car is often deployed in Monaco as the very narrow track makes for a dangerous race. At 260 km, low-speed Monaco is the only F1 GP race that does not adhere to the FIA’s mandated 305km minimum race distance. Ayrton Senna has won in Monaco more times than any other F1 driver, with six wins. There were five consecutive wins, between 1989 and 1993.
United States Grand Prix
The United States GP was first held in 1908. The United States F1 race has been held at ten different locations in total, with its current location since 2012 being the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Lewis Hamilton is the current record holder for the most wins in COTA, with six wins. Now the US Grand Prix is also held in Miami, and from this 2023 season there will be a race in Las Vegas!
Australian Grand Prix
The Australian GP was first run at Phillip Island in 1928. Since then, the race has been held at 23 different venues. It became part of the Formula One World Championship in 1985. It has been held at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, since 1996. Two drivers share the race record for most wins with four wins apiece: Lex Davison and Michael Schumacher.
Azerbaijan Grand Prix
A relatively new race, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was first held in 2016. It is raced on the Baku City Circuit, a street circuit. The first Azerbaijan GP winner was Daniel Ricciardo for Red Bull. To date, there have been no repeat winner Formula One drivers at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, although the race has twice been won by Mercedes and three times by Red Bull Racing.
Bahrain Grand Prix
The Bahrain GP made history in 2004 when it became the first Formula One Grand Prix to be held in the Middle East. Since then, it has taken place every year at the Bahrain International Circuit. The Bahrain Grand Prix has often faced much controversy due to the country’s human rights issues. Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the F1 driver with the most wins at the Bahrain Grand Prix, with five victories.
Best F1 Drivers Over The Last Decade
