denmark at the FIFA World Cup 2022

Throughout all their history, Denmark have performed in the planet’s main football tournament five times. The first time was in 1986 in Mexico. At that World Cup, the Denmark national football team performed brilliantly in the group stage with three wins in three matches over Germany, Scotland and Uruguay. However, in the Round of 16, the team from Northern Europe lost badly to Spain with a score of 1:5. The players managed to better the achievement only after 12 years. At the World Cup in France, the Danes even reached the quarterfinals, where, in a dramatic match, they lost to the future runner-up of the tournament, the Brazil national team, with a score of 2:3.

Path of Denmark to the 2022 World Cup

Currently, Denmark national team is a serious rival, capable of challenging the favourites. On their way to Qatar, the team crushed their opponents in the qualifying round, ranking first with a stupefying goal difference of 30:3.

As for the weak points of «Danish Dynamite», head coach Kasper Hjulmand’s biggest headache is still the goalkeeping position. The experienced Kasper Schmeichel has not yet gained the optimum shape after joining Nice: this season, he has already conceded 14 goals in 12 matches. However, it is too much of a risk to rely on the younger Oliver Christensen.

The strong points of the team include nothing more than a well-coordinated midfield. On counterattacks, the Danes swiftly break through the flanks and efficiently use all open spaces of the field. Normally, Højbjerg, who is good at long passes, is responsible for attack acceleration. At the World Cup in Qatar, the midfielder is expected to be in the starting line-up and take his usual central position in a 4-3-3.

To win, or not to win, that is the question

At the upcoming World Cup, Denmark will play in group D against France, Australia and Tunisia. According to analysts, the team will not have any problems with qualifying from the group: Tunisia and Australia are clear outsiders. France with their star-studded line-up is a different thing, although the Danes can make up a fairytale better than Hans Christian Andersen, as in 2022 when they outperformed the French twice in the UEFA Nations League.

The Denmark national team can face real challenges already in the Round of 16, if formidable Argentina led by Lionel Messi gets in their way. Bookmakers do not really believe in the final success of the Danes: on the list of title contenders, they are in the modest tenth position.
